The ADC is the premier organization for integrated media and the first international creative collective of its kind. Founded in New York in 1920, the ADC is a self-funding, not-for-profit membership organization that celebrates and inspires creative excellence, connecting creative visual communications professionals from around the world.
The judging took place February 8 – 10. Over 4000 pieces were entered from across the world in multiple categories—from brand, book and poster design, to environmental installation, digital animation, illustration and photography. After 86 years of doing this, the ADC has perfected their review system to make the organization seem effortless. We were taken care of beautifully. Kudos to Myrna Davis and Chris Reitz! As in any competition of this magnitude, the majority of the work was not that interesting and our task was to find those excellent pieces that represent the heartbeat of design now, imbued with intelligence, innovation, and relevance. Yet, some pieces were truly outstanding. For example, a meaningful and powerful piece was a 3” x 4” simple black and white calendar, where each page you tear off contains information and a photograph of a person on death row. Another thoughtful and beatifully designed piece was a book submitted by Elizabeth Yerin Shim in partial fulfillment for the requirements for the degree of Masters of Fine Arts from Yale, with a major in graphic design. In a discussion, Irma Boom, Chaz Maviyane-Davies and I, agreed that in general we felt that the posters were designed more like book pages, subtle and sometimes with beautiful textures and forms, operating more like wallpaper rather than posters. A poster operates by instantly drawing you in through its interplay of image and word creating an iconic and powerful message.
The out-of-town judges stayed at the Maritime Hotel, and as the ADC had generously supplied each judge with two fine bottles of wine each, we spent long purple-lipped nights by the Maritime fireplace bonding, laughing, falling in love and creating mayhem while discussing the design of the world. A once in a life time experience. We are grateful to the ADC for creating such platform and to the design jury for their time, expertise and friendship.
